Why are kids obese

Why are kids obese?

I just shared a post on our facebook page and couldnt resist having a rant about this one… I am a big advocate of growing my own food. When I was a kid, growing up in a migrant area, all the families had young kids, and the good news was in those days there wasn’t access to fast food chains, the first McDonalds came to our town in the late 70’s.

Our parents, grew food. Every garden in the neighbourhood had at least a few things growing, and i thought nothing of going out into the back garden picking and feasting on apricots, still sun warm and juice dripping. or grapes by the handfuls…Mum and Dad made the commitment when they first moved into their little housing estate home to plant fruit trees. If we complained of being hungry we were handed an apple or occasionally a home made jam sandwich. Worked for us and we were definitely not obese kids, nor did we feel like we missed out on anything…

I know the catch cry is take away food is cheap for time poor and $$ poor families and Im probably going to cop some flack by taking this stand. But what happened to the days of kids chipping in and doing chores or having the meal started by the time Mum and Dad get home from work, all everyone having garden chores? A veggie bed only takes a couple of hours a week, and what an amazing lesson for the whole family on whole organic foods. If you keep some seeds for next year and take a drive to the country to get some manure occasionally , it can cost you next to nothing for this amazing food….

I love the fact that there are juice bars these days that seem to appeal to the teenagers more than a Macca’s burger. Maybe we are moving in the right direction and Im grateful the super size mentality hasnt really taken hold in Australia. We just dont need that much food in one sitting….Im for feeling great, light and balanced rather than how much can I gorge on!

Ok Im asking for it… I’d love to hear your thoughts on this somewhat sensitive subject: Why are kids obese. $$ vs health debate lives on….

With love and laughter
